De acuerdo al documento ingresado al SEA, con estos cambios "se incrementará la capacidad efectiva de fusión de concentrado de cobre en aproximadamente un 30% para lograr niveles de producción de ánodos de cobre en un rango entre 200.000 a 240.000 ton/año".

La compañía minera de origen inglés, Anglo American, ingresó al Servicio de Evaluación Ambiental (SEA) un proyecto por US$200 millones para modificar la fundición de Chagres.

Este consiste en un conjunto de modificaciones que se llevarán a cabo en las unidades de proceso de dicha instalación, con el propósito de "incrementar los niveles de captura de las emisiones de gases y material particulado, y a la vez incrementar la capacidad efectiva de fusión de concentrado de cobre, desde un promedio de 600.000 ton/año, hasta un promedio de 800.000 ton/año, logrando una operación más productiva y con menores emisiones", según indica el informe ingresado por Anglo American.

De acuerdo al documento ingresado al SEA, con estos cambios "se incrementará la capacidad efectiva de fusión de concentrado de cobre en aproximadamente un 30% para lograr niveles de producción de ánodos de cobre en un rango entre 200.000 a 240.000 ton/año".

La fecha estimada para el inicio de ejecución del proyecto es el 1 de julio de 2013. Con respecto a la vida útil, en el documento se señala que "el proyecto no tiene una vida útil definida puesto que al formar parte de la Fundición Chagres, puede operar indefinidamente en la medida que exista oferta de concentrados de cobre".
